Latest news

So how was International Women's Day for you?

The Women's Resource Centre team was out in force, supporting the Million Women Rise march in central London. We reported live via Twitter, we've blogged about it here and uploaded our photos here. You can also see a great video here (but it's not ours).

Events for International Women's Day are continuing throughout March. You can see listings on the International Women's Day website and the Women in London site.

News from the women's sector

Maternity rights for women from abroad

Maternity Action has produced a set of information sheets on maternity rights for women from abroad. They cover employment rights, benefits, tax credits, UK Border Agency support and entitlement to free NHS care.

There are information sheets for asylum seekers, refugees, refused (failed) asylum seekers, European nationals, women with no recourse to public funds, women with indefinite leave to remain, and undocumented migrants.

For more information email rosbragg@maternityaction.org.uk .

Media training for equality groups

The National Equality Partnership (based at the Women's Resource Centre) is running training with the Media Trust for equality groups on dealing with the media.

Dealing with the media can be a major challenge for equality groups, including many women's organisations, and this course will give you the skills and understanding to approach this area with confidence.

The training will take place in London on 24 March. Read more...

Campaigning to give local residents choice over lapdancing clubs

The government has pledged to tackle the inadequate licensing of lap dancing clubs via reforms contained in the Policing and Crime Bill, but Object and the Fawcett Society say these changes will not go far enough. The reforms will be optional and won't apply to venues holding lap dancing nights less than once a month.

Why is the UN failing women?

VSO is calling on the United Nations to create a UN Agency for Women.

VSO has consistently heard back from its volunteers that women’s inequality is holding back progress on reducing poverty. Despite advances in gender equality, discrimination still holds back millions of women from fulfilling their potential.

The United Nations system is currently failing women by fragmenting responsibility for improving their situation across a number of small, poorly funded bodies.

This International Women’s Day, VSO asks you to take action and ask the UN to make a real change to women's lives. Act now at www.vso.org.uk/women.

Centre for Social Justice awards

The CSJ Awards recognise and reward effective poverty fighting groups from across the UK. You can apply now for a chance to win part of the prize fund of £50,000.

There is no application form. Simply describe in 500 words or less how your organization makes an exceptional contribution to tackling poverty and turning lives around. Deadline for applications: 17 March 2009.

And Finally...

Two great events for women's organisations

The Women's Resource Centre has two great events coming up. Firstly, our conference on Seizing the opportunities of CEDAW on 24 March. CEDAW is often referred to as the 'International Bill of Rights for Women', and 2009 marks its 30th anniversary. Come along to this conference to learn more about CEDAW and other international women's rights instruments and how you can use them to strengthen your organisation and lobbying voice. There's a fantastic line-up of speakers and places are going fast! Read more...

If that's not enough, the next session in WRC's series of Building Futures trainings will focus on women's organisations and social enterprise (2 April, London). This session is for women's organisations who want to explore the possibility of earning a trading income. Read more about the training.
