CEDAW conference and Stories of CEDAW Project
Our conference, Seizing the Opportunities of CEDAW, held a few weeks ago, was a great success, with 150 wome attending from all over the UK. If you didn't have a chance to attend, you can read a brief report of the conference, read our blog and browse our photos. A full report and short film of the day will be available in the near future. For more information, or to express interest in being on a ‘working group’ to drive a women’s sector strategy for the next time the UK Government is examined in 2011, please email kara@wrc.org.uk
The Stories of CEDAW project aims to celebrate 30 years of CEDAW with a collection of stories, showing how the convention has been used to address injustice and open up pathways of women's empowerment. These will be shared with women across the world as a source of inspiration. For further information, please email info@stories-of-cedaw.net.

News from the women's sector
Help stop the integration of African Well Woman's Service in Waltham Forest
Waltham Forest PCT has recently decided to integrate the African Well Woman's Service into generic sexual and reproductive health services and exclude non-borough residents from accessing them.
FORWARD are seriously concerned that this will mean no access to vital specialist services for hundreds of women affected by female genital mutilation (FGM) who need support and specialist care. They need your help to convince the PCT that they should reconsider their position and continue to fund a separate and specialist service for women who have experienced FGM. Please send a letter to the PCT urging them to reconsider their decision - further details (including a template letter) are available on FORWARD's website.

EVAW briefing on Home Office consultation
EVAW have produced a briefing on the Home Office consultation on violence against women. The briefing gives you information on how to have your say by responding to the consultation online, or attending a roadshow or stakeholder event in your area. The deadline for responses to the consultation is 29 May 2009.

Call for applications to take part in BIHR’s Human Rights and Poverty Project
BIHR has been funded by City Parochial Foundation and Joseph Rowntree Foundation
to provide support to up to six London-based voluntary and community
sector organisations that are working with and for people facing
poverty or social injustice. The support will enable organisations to
use human rights to strengthen their voice and influence with policy
makers.
An information day is being
held on 20th April for interested organisations, to provide you with the opportunity to meet
the project officer and clarify any questions you might have about the
project. Please note that it is not necessary to attend the information
day in order to apply to join the project.
For more information on the project and to register for the information day, please visit BIHR’s website.

Launch of the Comprehensive Area Assesment
The Comprehensive Area Assessment
(CAA) has just been launched and for the first time, local public
services will be held to account collectively for their impact on the
lives of local people. This means that CAA will look at all the bodies responsible for local public
services, which are increasingly expected to work in partnership to
tackle the challenges facing their communities. It should provide a snapshot of how
effectively local partnerships are working together to deliver local
people's priorities.
The CAA framework document published on 10 February 2009, sets out how CAA will be delivered from April 2009. Urban Forum have produced a briefing on the CAA and WRC published a response to the CAA consultation last summer.
